This week has been another busy week for Buckfastleigh Fire Station. We started off the on monday morning joining our fellow colleagues at Ashburton (V19P1) to reports of a barn fire. At 07.47 a caller could see a small fire within a barn and was unsure of the location. Crews quickly located the fire at Place Lane, behind South Dartmoor Community College. Upon arrival crews found a load of wood and rubbish alight that was stored in a derelict barn, they quickly got to work to extinguish the fire using a 45mm jet. The cause of the fire is unknown. On Wednesday evening at 22.14 Buckfastleigh (V22P1) was called to reports of a fire within Whitecleave Quarry. The caller had said they had heard a loud bang coming from the quarry. As crews arrived they saw a small fire within the trees and made their way in to the quarry. Once access had been gained they quickly realised it was the other side of the river underneath the A38 and made their way round. Once the scene had been located crews found a load of rubbish that had been set alight. Crews made the scene safe and we returned to home station. Yesterday Buckfastleigh (V22P1), Ashburton (V19P1) and Bovey tracey (V20P1) were called to reports of an RTC on the A38 by the slip road between Linhay and Peartree. Whilst on route there was a change of address and this incident was confirmed to be at the off-slip on the A38 at Goodstone, Ashburton. Upon arrival crews found two vehicles involved in a collision and two elderly ladies still in the rear vehicle although not trapped. The casualties were conveyed to hospital via land ambulance and crews made the rear vehicle safe. This afternoon at 15.30 Buckfastleigh (V22P1) was call to a chimney fire at Bakers Park, Holne. On arrival crews found a fire within the liner and used the chimney gear and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire. The occupants were given some advice and crews returned home station. A clean chimney can help prevent fires and structural damage to your property. Regular cleaning of your chimney or flues will eliminate the build up of soot and clear obstructions such as bird or animal nests, leaves and debris. You will also reduce emissions into the atmosphere by assisting the complete combustion of the fuel. Always ensure you have a working smoke alarm in your property. Also make sure you are not at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning by having appliances installed and serviced by competent engineers, never block air bricks, vents or flues and fit a carbon monoxide detector. A bit of a read but thanks for your continued support.
