This week in Roller Derby by KEITH COPPAGE This week in Roller Derby history: 60 years ago tonight Bert Wall scored 17 points--more than half his Chiefs total of 29, not enough to beat the Braves in Long Beach (B, 32-29). Joyce Beasley was high for the girls with a mere 5... 10 years later the Bombers swept the Hawaiians 3-0 in the last series of the year leading up to the playoffs... In 1958, the season ended for the Bombers on a high note as they nipped the Chiefs 28-24 in Oakland before a sellout crowd; California Gov. Knight sat there enjoying the 8th period having rushed over from a campaign talk. Later this week in 58 they called it a dream series as the Roller Derby All-Stars came to town for a 14-game series with the Bombers. Gerry Murrays girls included Chief teammate Gloria Mack, Terry Lynch (Jolters), Loretta Behrens and Shirley Hardman (Red Devils) and HOF inductee Liz Hernandez (Westerners); Bert (Braves) had a good guys squad with Billy Gardner (Chiefs), Porky and Hal Janowitz (Westerners), and Bill Laurino (Devils). The Bombers had added for 59 Jeannie Porter, Dolores Doss and May Hansen, along with Punky Gardner and Dave Pound. Wotta team! All for $2.00 and the Sunday games were carried live (oh to have VCRs way back when) on KTVU. Elbows Anderson was something of a press rep and told the papers they were trying to rid the game of fisticuffs... In New York, ABC announced it would carry Roller Derby again as a fringe offering for stations that wanted it... Tonight in 1968, Julian Silva scored 8, Joanie 6 and the Bombers topped the Cardinals 44-40 in Oakland as the Bombers led 7-3; HOF inductee Sandy Dunn (Cards) managed to skate past Delores Tucker in a match race. She did her first live interview with Walt Harris that Sunday with Monte, commenting that Kezar fans were throwing things at them and spitting at them and she was just sick of it. Indeed. On a happier note Jerry Seltzer promoted a Mexican Independence Day game in San Jose and noted that the teams beloved Gil Orozco would be honored by Latino fans. Gil spoke a few warm remarks to Bomber boosters that night... In 1973 the Chiefs and Pioneers opened the doomed 1973 winter season in New York and Texas.
