This week in my intro to soc class we covered structural functionalism and the method of using material social facts to understand nonmaterial social facts (from Durkheims Suicide). For a more modern example of material and nonmaterial social facts, I had them read Broken Windows as it is an easy read. After we reviewed that piece, I presented them with its criticisms and to hammer the point of social facts home further (as well as the problems with the Broken Windows theorem), we watched The House in the Middle (1954). They really got a kick out of it (lots of laughter) and many of them wrote about how it tied into social facts in their weekly reflection papers [an orderly physical environment -> increased perceptions of safety & security]. https://youtube/watch?v=pGJcwaUWNZg
