This week is Get Smart About Antibiotics Week! The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of appropriate antibiotic prescription and usage, so that our antibiotics remain effective! When antibiotics are prescribed to your child, it is important to administer the full course as directed by your physician, even if he/she starts feeling better. Skipping the last few doses might mean leaving some stronger, drug-resistant bacteria in your childs system. If your childs doctor decides that antibiotics are not the best course of treatment, it is likely that your child is sick due to a viral infection, in which case antibiotics are not effective. Rather than request antibiotics to treat these types of illnesses, we urge parents to discuss other options for relieving your childs symptoms.
