This week was another great success in the world of WP Club Rugby. With the weather scare we experienced on Friday in Cape Town, all games still went ahead as scheduled and some interesting results surfaced. SK Walmers’ impressive run of results came to an abrupt halt at the hands of fellow Community Cup team, Durbell, at The Track on Saturday. Over the past few weeks there has been very little action taking place in Super League A, as Maties, UWC, Vics and UCT have all been on a study break as the students prepare for their exams. That, coupled with the fact that Hamiltons had a double bye over the past fortnight, left us with very little action in Super League A. Other teams who continue to impress this season are Sir Lowrians and Primrose, both of whom seem very well equipped for the new format in WP Club Rugby next season. The new format will see them come up against the best clubs in WP. We are sure they will not disappoint! The same situation exists for Uni-Mill RFC next season, and with the rich vein of form we have seen them experience this season, after having lost only one game in their last 11 outings, a three league jump doesn’t seem too much of a daunting task for them. Coach Isma-eel Dollie believes they will have to work hard at keeping their core group of players next season if they are to be successful. Trials for the WP Disas begins next week and with the quality of rugby we have seen from teams in the lower divisions, there is no doubt going to be some tough battles for positions in that team. Preparation for the competition taking place in Margate, Durban, in September has started very early this year to ensure they unearth the best players in the lower divisions. This week the Cape Rugby TV crew will be covering the derby match between Perseverance RFC and Temperance RFC at City Park Sports Complex. This will be a unique encounter, as both teams will have home-ground advantage. A reminder to all that club games will kick off at 15:30 this weekend, due to the DHL Stormers’ home game at DHL Newlands. We once again look forward to a fantastic week of Club Rugby. Don’t forget to follow #wpclubrugby to stay abreast of all results taking place on the weekend.
