This weekend has been a pretty good one for movies. Friday night, I watched the Hong Kong comedy Let the Bullets Fly(2010) (with Chow Yun Fat). Its the story of a bandit leader who poses as a newly appointed mayor in order to fleece a town but instead has to rid it of its real ruler, a crooked business man know as Master Huang. It was decent with some really funny bits and it was interesting to see Chow playing a villain for a change. The only real drawback for me is that, for a comedy, the 2hr12min run time was waaaaay too long. Id give the movie a B but it might have been a B+ had it been a little shorter. Yesterday, I saw the new Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow. I thought it was quite excellent. It really is Sci-Fi Groundhogs Day but the script plays with that concept in excellent ways, making it both funny and exciting. There are some minor plot points that I had a problem with but overall, very enjoyable. Tom wasnt annoying and Emily Blunt was pretty darn great and I really liked the alien CGI. I heartily recommend this movie, one of my favorites this year, and give it a A. (For the record, my favorite films this year are 1 Coherence, 2. Captain America, 3. Grand Piano, 4. Edge of Tomorrow, and 5. The Lego Movie.) Last night, I watched Insidious Chapter Two (2013) on Netflix. I had been wanting to see it for a while since I think the original is one of the best horror movies of the last few years. I had heard the sequel wasnt as good. While I had some minor issues with some plot points, I really enjoyed the film and think its a great addition to the storyline. There are some great jump scares and some truly creepy moments (Dalton and the tin can phone scene gave me goosebumps.) Its one of the few horror movies that Ive seen recently that actually frightened me and made me uncomfortable, and not a single bit of gore is spilled during the course of the story. For horror fans, a definite A movie. Non-horror fans, Id still say give the series a go. Lastly, this afternoon, I watched the film adaptation of Dean Koontzs Odd Thomas (2013). I havent read the book, nor any of Deans work in a while, so I dont know how good of an adaptation it is but as a movie, its pretty darn fun. It seems more like a big budget television series pilot at times but the character of Odd Thomas, actual name, is a great role and Anton Yelchin does a really good job of bringing him to life. Willem Dafoe gets a rare good guy role as the cop who knows Odds secret. Odd can see dead people and he is compelled to help them. He can also see creatures called Bodachs that feed on evil and dread and only appear when something bad is about to happen. Odds quest to uncover that evil makes for a funny and exciting movie. Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) almost made me forgive him for the crapfest that was Van Helsing. Almost but not quite. I doubt that we will get to see any of Odds other adventures brought to the silver screen considering this film didnt exactly take the film world by storm but I will be reading the books in the near future. This is a good solid B film and well worth your time, even if we have seen similar stories before.
