This is one of the big themes of the movie American Sniper and the attitude of U.S. military personnel in general. Chris Kyle is referred to by all the other Marines as the Legend for his prowess with a rifle, but he insists -- believably -- that his real motivation for being there is killing terrorists and keeping the country safe. That kind of sense of mission and humility imbues him with a special kind of respect from his fellow Marines and the audience.
