This weeks interview on the contributor is Kenneth Chin- the Tarzan of Singapore who loves animals! 1. Can you do a short introduction of yourself? What do you do? Hello, I am Kenneth Chin. I am 19 years old this year. I am currently studying Veterinary Technology in Temasek Polytechnic. I have been drawing animals all my life and thus built my foundations. I have been an avid manga reader since secondary school so I am influenced by the Japanese way of drawing. My other hobbies include pets and collecting figurines which I splurge all my savings on even though I am still only a student. My dreams are to go Tokyo whenever I can and sketch the places in there (I am in love with their culture), publish my own comics and illustrations and keep my dream pets. 2. What inspired you to sketch in the first? Animals. It had always been animals. My mother drew animals for me when I was very young and then I copied and carried on from there. I simply love drawing with my favourite mediums. The romance of the lines and the drawing instrument, the splashing of ink or watercolour and the finishes although I always spoil my sketches in the end. You will see that I have many styles because I still have not found my style yet but there are certain things I enjoy making- lines. I only took art seriously when I entered polytechnic when I aim to finish my sketchbooks but unfortunately I am still struggling. I would throw away many unfinished books and wasted many paper. Till today, I am always unsatisfied with every sketch I made and needed to learn to be more positive. Isaac introduced and exposed me to the world of urbansketching when I first added him on facebook. I follow many professional artists on social media so they inspire me every day to make a sketch. 3. Why do you draw this particular piece for the sketchtravel Singapore book? Since my strength is animals, I wanted to draw a place with animals. I can draw my place since I have many pets but it doesn’t represent Singapore. I wanted to go to the zoo but I didn’t have time to go all the way there and the animals aren’t as affectionate as horses. Well, they are wild animals. I grew up in many places and moved house many times. I have many other places of memories but I chose this place because this is about animals I love. 4. What are the art tools you used for this piece? Manga screen tones, noodler’s ink (I got this ink as a gift from Dr. Mabel Yap), liquid paper and watercolour pencils. I love multi-media. I wanted to use watercolours but I am still good with it. I wanted to leave the sketch black and white but my itchy hands added colour to the equine… 5. What memories does your neighbourhood hold for you? This isn’t really my neighbourhood but National Equestrian Centre is relatively near to my place. I had an attachment there for 3 weeks to care for the horses. I never knew there are horses in Singapore at first. Since exotic animals are my interest, I fall in love with horses very easily. It also gave me the confidence to start drawing horses because I heard they were very hard to draw. Now that I have drawn them a number of times, it is also makes drawing of the other ruminants easier because of the similarity of the structure of everything except the coat. Horses are great animals with personalities, though 2 weeks is too short time to get close to them, they can be affectionate too. I have photos of the horses in here in my room as memories too. 6. Whats the hardest thing to draw for you? I am sure most people find difficulty in moving objects unless you have photographic memory. I am no different. I would say my weakness is humans especially without references. 7. Whats the easiest thing to draw for you? Animals. Especially those I have drawn before.
