This weeks tip from Dr. P: Most people know that Vitamin D is important for bone health. But did you know that low Vitamin D levels are related to many abnormal health conditions? Cardiovascular risk, cancer, asthma, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, and even the flu are some of them. Fatigue and body aches can be caused by low Vitamin D. I have tested Vitamin D levels on 100’s of patients, and over 80% of them are very low. Not enough direct sun exposure and sunscreen are major factors. But even if you spend time in the sun, you still may be low. The only way to really know is to have a Vitamin D blood test. There are different tests available, the correct test is a 25(OH)D. The normal ranges that will be listed on the report are outdated, so don’t be deceived if your results are in the “normal range.” Your results should be between 60 – 80 ng/ml. Most people need to supplement vitamin D to have adequate levels. I base the vitamin D supplementation amount on the results of the patient’s test. Know your vitamin D level – it’s important.
