Walker recorded his version of this Lightnin Hopkins tune in 1971. Phillip Walker was one of those great artists for whom notoriety seemed to fall between the cracks. Two in fact, both on Saturday - one at Blues City Delis 10th Anniversary STREETFEST, and a 2nd gig at BBs Jazz, Blues & Soups. 06:08AM (3:57) Brian Templeton Sugar Girl from Bloozin (2006) on Brian Templeton -- Brian is a fine singer and top-notch harp blower - you may recognize his name from his work in The Radio Kings band. 06:14AM Set break 06:17AM (2:39) Big Guitars from Texas The Lost Incas from Big Guitars From Texas (1988) on Rykodisc -- Both tunes you heard from Big Guitars were originally released on the album Trash, Twang and Thunder. The CD version is a compilation of 2 LPs - Trash, Twang and Thunder & Thats Cool Thats Trash (both released in the mid-1980s.) 06:20AM (5:21) The Tail Gators Yard Dog from Mumbo Jumbo (1986) on Wrestler Records -- This is from the vinyl, folks. Don Leady and Keith Ferguson. Dig Fergusons base line in this tune - or at least I sure hope you did. That was the whole purpose of this exercise! 06:25AM (2:52) Big Guitars from Texas Riot At Huntsville from Big Guitars From Texas (1988) on Rykodisc 06:30AM Set break 06:34AM (2:46) Magic Sam Mama, Mama - Talk to Your Daughter from West Side Soul (1990) on Delmark -- Magic Sam Maghett, whose fame was on the rise prior to his tragically young death at only 32 years of age. West Side Soul was recorded in the early Chicago winter of 1967. 06:36AM (3:53) Leroy Jodie Pierson Easy Rider from Rusty Nail (1988) on nighthawk Local -- This album features noted violinist Geoff Seitz playing drums (and some violin, too.) This is one of Leroys compositions, AND hes playing the Focal Point on Saturday night (Sept 27th.) 06:40AM (3:56) Selwyn Birchwood Queen Of Hearts from Dont Call No Ambulance (2014) on Alligator Records New -- Selwyn is playing in St. Louis TONIGHT at Beale On Broadway. Showtime is EARLY (8pm -ish), as his band is playing the early show prior to Kim Massies Thursday night appearance. 06:44AM Set break 06:49AM (2:46) Howard Tate Stop from Get It While You Can The Legendary Sessions (1995) on Polygram -- This is one of the finest of 1960s soul - what a great song, and frankly, I just wanted to hear it again. If you didnt enjoy it, you might want to go to the Doctor and report that you fear youve a hole in your soul. Ha! 06:52AM (4:42) Willie Walker And The Butanes Crying to Do from Right Where I Belong (2004) on One On One Records -- Wee Willie Walker was singin soul in the 1960s (out of Nashville, I believe) and The Butanes are a tough soul and R&B outfit under the the leadership of guitarist Curtis Obeda.
