This year the Muslim Festival of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) and the Jewish High Holyday of Yom Kippur fall on the same day. Anticipating the potential friction this might cause in Israeli society, The Abraham Fund Co-Executive Directors, Amnon Beeri-Sulitzeanu and Dr. Thabet Abu Ras, issued a letter appealing to Israels President Reuven (Ruby) Rivlin, to call on all Israels citizens to be tolerant and demonstrate restraint; to act with sensitivity and to do all in their power to prevent friction between Jews and Arabs around the festival period: The fact that these festivals coincide, together with different ways in which they are celebrated: on the one hand fasting; on the other festive meals and expressions of joy, create a specific sensitivity and potential to kindle strife, and tensions that may lead to violence between Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel. There is also a real concern that extremist elements within both Jewish and Arab society, who have an interest in deepening tensions between the two communities, will see the proximity of dates as a golden opportunity to encourage acts of incitement and provocation. A copy of their letter (in Hebrew) can be found in the link below.
