The canal system is actually 524 miles long and A National Heritage Area , meaning the Federal Government does not own it and it is supported by contributions It encompasses 4834 square miles and touches 234 cities a, towns and villages. For those who know the spot, ( Erie Canal village in Rome NY ) the mule is long gone and the barge no longer operates ( our kids used to ride the barge pulled by the mule) The buildings are in poor condition. (There are notes posted on the buildings , " No longer fit for human occupancy") The property needs a lot of attention. ( overgrown weeds and mosquitos ) But it is still worth visiting.
