Thomas Doherty printed an interesting article on physics in the Review of Books.... The author and I started apparently about the same time on particle physics, my involvement mostly ended however with the end of school and the move into other areas. For me, physics seemed so bland and hidebound because there was very little new being reported at the time and the reason for that was that if you broke off into your own school of thought, you had better be right or youd never get another job. Today, its a whole different world; there are so many exciting theories being advanced that it makes your head spin. And the reason for this is that almost none of the advanced theories are provable in a post manufacturing world using available technology; so that gives being a maverick a leg up and the support it never had before. And makes it much more interesting! If they were teaching physics fifty years ago the way they are advancing theories today, I think it would have had many more followers who were excited by the creative possibilities of exploring quantum as well as on the other end of the scale with string theory, M Theory, and the concept of multiple universes.... Just an aside but I believe few scientists active today will reinforce the fact that they got where they were by not rocking the boat in the beginning, while now if you dont make waves, nobody will ever learn your name....
