Those in the I might as well sin camp need to take careful notice of Pauls word: Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. Ephesians 5:6,7 Foot washing is only effective for those who do not return to the mud. On the other hand, those in the I need to get saved again every week camp need to embrace and believe the Lords words: A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean (John 13:10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all). It is crucial that you learn to make this distinction. To be around sinners may give you an unclean feeling. But, if you didnt join with them in your sin you are not unclean. Just wash off your feet! To be tempted with ungodly desires may make you feel polluted. But if you didnt yield to those thoughts then you are not polluted. Just clean off the dust! And if you did yield for a moment (and who among us has never yielded?), then confess your sin, renounce your sin, and receive cleansing from your sin through the blood. Prove that you are walking in the light by immediately leaving the darkness. And what if I like the darkness and begin to make it my habit to live there? DANGER! There is no such option for the people of God. We are commanded to put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light), since it is those whose deeds are evil who choose darkness rather than light (John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil). The fact is that, We do not belong to the night or to the darkness, because those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet (1 Thess. 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; 1 Thess 5:6-8 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation). Yes, it is true that we were once darkness, but now-glory and praise to God- (we) are light in the Lord. Therefore we must live as children of light (Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light): Were not who we used to be, and we must never forget how much God has done for us in the past and how much He does for us in the present. As Matthew Henry noted, The provision made for our cleansing should not make us presumptuous, but the more cautious. I have washed my feet, how shall I defile them? Song of Solomon 5:3 I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on again? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them? From yesterdays pardon, we should fetch an argument against this days temptation. In fact, Henry took the fact of our cleansing to be a very serious exhortation to continued holiness: See what ought to be the daily care of those who through grace are in a justified state, and that is to wash their feet; to cleanse themselves from the guilt they contract daily through infirmity and inadvertence, by the renewed exercise of repentance, with a believing application of the virtue of Christs blood. We must also wash our feet by constant watchfulness against every thing that is defiling, for we must cleanse our way, and cleanse our feet by taking heed thereto, Psalm 119:9 How can a young man cleanse his way?By taking heed according to Your word. The priests, when they were consecrated, were washed with water; and though they did not need afterwards to be so washed all over, yet, whenever they went to minister, they must wash their feet and hands at the laver, on pain of death. Exodus 30:19,20 for Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it. 20 When they go into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the Lord, they shall wash with water, lest they die. But, if we walk in humble dependence on the Lord, keeping our hearts free from presumption and willful sin, we can rest in our once-for-all, lifetime cleansing and our take as often as needed daily cleansing. We dont need to get saved afresh several times a week. We just have to keep our feet clean.
