Those who think that a huge uproar, such as the one we are currently experiencing after the SBOE meeting, the CECI’s actions, Tody Bennett’s limbo under the legal bar, and the Tindley charter school embarrassment, will sway the upcoming election, are not necessarily correct. Yes, we were able to pull together and elect Glenda. On the other hand, the stats show that the same people in Decatur Township that voted “Yes” on the referendum, also voted for Rep.Bob Behning, arguably the main reason that public school districts like Decatur need to rely on referendums to keep their doors open. Do not assume for even one minute that all voters are as informed, motivated, and sincere as you are. They are not. Many, many voters will vote their party, straight ticket. People vote for the party or individual with whom they have some kind of relationship. Straight party voters will vote that way because “they always have,” or, “I was raised to vote Whatever.” Those who don’t vote straight ticket, but haven’t really been paying attention, will vote for the name they have heard or seen the most, as that often equates to “stability,” which equates to “comfortable with.” There are many ways to help your candidate over-come the average voter’s mindsets. Getting his/her name in the minds of the voters is crucial. Signs, advertisements, mailings…all have proven track records (which is why they are everywhere before elections!)……….but they are expensive, very expensive.
