Thought I would share: New York State PTA Responds: Test Environment As testing season approaches some parents will request that their children be permitted to sit quietly and read a book or even be given alternate work after they refuse a test. To prohibit these activities seems unreasonable as they are neither disruptive nor do they compromise SED’s test security protocols. While SED has not provided any specific guidance to school districts with regard to this, school districts have been cautioned about offering alternate instruction or other activities that go beyond passive measures intended to prevent disruption to the testing process. PTA principles of family-school partnerships include shared power between home and school. Parents, educators, administrators and boards of education understand the unique needs of their community. Ultimately, the practices that are utilized by individual school districts regarding test refusal should reflect the needs, values and priorities of their families, schools and the community. Thanks for all you do for children and youth! New York State PTA
