Thought someone might find this article interesting as I did! ;) I realize that the Poarch Creek Indians are years away from this same scenario, but all the same it does concern me for what its worth, that when I visit the weekly obituaries, I am noticing more and more of the Poarch Creek tribal members leaving this world and traveling onto the next and its not just the elderly that are passing away, its the younger generations as well. Is this what you want for your tribe as time continues? Your tribe lost 3 of its members that I know about in the month of Sept and 1 in August. :/ I guess what my point is, its so imperative that the Tribal Counsel think outside of the box now and look toward their tribes future and realize that everything doesnt always have to be about the almighty dollar. You have so many whose lineal descent connects them to the areas and to the ancestors of those who have walked with and/or is related to those who are on the rolls now via the existing rules/requirements to be a member. Why cant you embrace them, welcome them and love them just as you do the elite few who are fortunate to be a tribal member right now? It just breaks my heart to see so many longing to belong to a tribe of people that their ancestors traveled the same paths with. Where did compassion, love, pride, kinship and respect for one another go? Why are so many digging in their heels and being stubborn and disrespectful, basically saying go away and leave us all alone, its our tribe and your not welcome? This mindset is NOT what the past ancestors would have wanted and I feel in my soul that its breaking their hearts to know that their kinfolks are being turned away not for having their blood running through their veins, but because of a rule or requirement that has set such limited boundaries to be a tribal family member. Mvto!
