Thought this was SO interesting. Found the article from the US National Library of Medicine (National Institutes of Health). The article was about the relationship of DEPRESSION AND NUTRITION There was many other foods involved but I am writing about carbs, since so many people think they are bad for you, just make sure you get the right KIND of carbs. Carbohydrates have been proven to affect peoples mood and behavior. When humans consume a meal high in carbohydrates the release of insulin occurs, and it helps assisting in taking the sugar into the cells where it can be used for energy. Also, it triggers the entry of tryptophan (type of amino acid) to the brain. Tryptophan affects the neurotransmitter levels in the brain, and gives a feeling of well being. Consumption of diets low in carbohydrate tends to precipitate depression, since the production of brain chemicals serotonin and tryptophan that promote the feeling of well being, are affected by carbohydrate consumption (nutrition is one way that affects these chemicals, there are others as well) It is suggested that LOW glycemic index (GI) foods such as: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pasta, etc. are more likely to provide a moderate but lasting effect on brain chemistry, mood, and energy level than the HIGH GI foods: primarily sweets - that tend to provide immediate but temporary relief.
