Thoughts about an exercise in disenfranchisment: The Referendum - TopicsExpress

Thoughts about an exercise in disenfranchisment: The Referendum concerns something non-party-poltical and is perhaps the cleanest form of political expression a countrys people can give. People being on the electoral roll is a key component of this. Accordingly, given a choice, it would be appropriate to leave people on it rather than remove them. (There is perhaps a case for cleansing the roll but during times of quiet in the election cycles.) Strange then that some Electoral Registration Officers (EROs or the Assessor to many) choose now to undertake a cleansing of the roll. (Hugh Munro & Glasgow for instance - there was an apparent communcation with concerned residents saying this exercise wasnt to be taken further, but thats not to say it wasnt.) (Does anyone know about elsewhere in Scotland?) Better Yesterday fear the awakening of the poor and/or alienated who tend not to vote. Cleansing of the roll, silent or otherwise, will thus be a strategy to encourage. If you know anyone potentially affected please ask them to check for inclusion in the roll. They have until 1st September to rectify an exclusion they were unaware of. Indeed, ask every Yes voter you encounter to be sure theyre on the roll and eligible to vote.
