Thoughts from China- I have had a couple of messages asking why I havent been posting lately. I was in Peoples Square in Linyi two weeks ago and I made a couple of negative remarks about Chairman Mao. A policeman heard me, arrested me, and I spent the last two weeks in prison trying to get out. After paying a huge fine they finally released me..........What, you want the truth? The truth is, ask any teacher and they will tell you that the (long) time span in between mid year break and the end of the school year is very boring. There are few vacations and they are only one or two days at a time. I do still enjoy teaching here and I have been spicing up my classes, but even the students are kind of lethargic. I have also been thinking about going home. I dont like change and when I return to the US I will have a lot of it. I will stay with Lindsay and Alex for a couple of weeks but I need to find a place to live and get settled in. I want to buy a sailboat ASP after I return. I have actually started looking online as boats in the 30 foot plus bracket sell very slowly in this economy. I will be able to pay cash and cash is king. There is a good chance that what I am looking at today will still be there when I return. I am used to and comfortable living here and as I said I dont like change. I am also feeling some pressure to re-up to teach here next year. I have been promised a big salary increase and other perks. The nice thing is that I do not have to work anymore if I dont want do, I have more than sufficient income for the rest of my life. There are also many strings on my heart pulling me back. I will try post this weekend, it is Friday morning here, a couple of my thoughts about my return. By the way, you do not ever make negative remarks about Mao in China, and I am not kidding about that!
