Thoughts on the value of writing- Most people do not take the time to write a book, articles for publication, or blogs. One reason to write is to help you think more clearly and communicate more succinctly. If I can’t write a good, clear article on a business issue; I need to rethink my position. Perhaps I missed something or failed to understand the situation completely. This is the most important reason to write--to improve your expertise. The second reason to write is to build credibility in your field. As you write and publish in print or online, you build credibility with others in your field. The third reason to write is to increase your discipline. Writing regularly requires self-discipline. You have to set aside time regularly to write articles. For a book, you need even more time for research, writing a draft, and refining it into a final product. Self-discipline is a good trait for anyone. Some people think I must have a lot of free time to write as much as I do. My answer is, “I make a plan that focuses time on this part of my work.” Most allow other pressures to keep them from writing. The fourth reason to write is to develop creative thinking. Creativity shows up as you find something to write about. This isn’t just about choosing a topic. You must think about a unique angle for it or offer a different conclusion or share some other factor to make it stand out. I apply scripture to business principles and processes. Some of my articles come from issues I encountered with clients. When I write an article, I need to insure that my thinking is clear. If I struggle to write an article, I go back and refine it. Paul wrote, “For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand.” (2 Corinthians 1:13, NIV). As you write, follow Paul’s example.
