Thousands evacuated after rainstorm in SW China Severe rainfall in southwest #China has triggered flooding and landslides, affecting thousands and forcing the #evacuation of more than 23,000 people. The worst affected areas are Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces along with the municipality of Chongqing, where a blue alert has been issued. The death toll continues to rise and many remain missing. As of Monday afternoon, there were 12 reported deaths. Around 8,000 people from Chongqing have been evacuated after hundreds of houses were brought down by floods and landslides. Local authorities have organized for the delivery of relief materials. As search and #rescue efforts in southwestern regions continue, locals in south China await the arrival of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is expected to make landfall on China’s southern coast by Tuesday afternoon. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds and may lead to flooding in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. An orange alert has been issued, the second most severe in the 4 tier warning system. China’s severe weather in recent months may be linked to the El Nino weather phenomenon, the first to hit China in five years.
