Threat Of New Depression Remains in Southwest Gulf UPDATED 11 AM EDT, September 19, 2013 UPDATED By WeatherBug Sr. Meteorologist, James West Click to Enlarge Related Content: Humberto Satellite Humberto Forecast Track Manuel Satellite Manuel Forecast Track United States Alert Map Community Photos Yet another tropical system could be forming in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico today. It could soak the central Mexico coast, following right on the heels of Hurricane Ingrid and Tropical Storm Fernand, before moving toward the U.S. Meanwhile, Hurricane Manuel is ashore on Mexico`s Sea of Cortez coast. Tropical Depression Humberto is spinning across the open eastern Atlantic. A disturbance moving across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, just east of Mexico`s gulf coast, is expected to strengthen during the next couple of days. Despite it being poorly organized at this time, it could become a tropical depression or even a tropical storm within the next 48 hours. If its winds reach a speed of 39 mph, it would be given the name "Jerry." Once it gets organized, it will start to follow a very similar path to Hurricane Ingrid. Earlier this week, Ingrid drenched the southern Yucatan and eastern Mexico, causing widespread flooding. However, most long-range weather forecast models have the storm veering into the central Gulf of Mexico. From there, its moisture will merge with a developing area of low pressure in the lower Mississippi Valley this weekend, which will then spread across the Deep South and move into the Carolinas and Florida. Heavy rain could be in the offing from Louisiana to Florida to the Carolinas, so residents are urged to closely watch this system`s development over the next couple days. Meanwhile, Manuel is ashore over western Mexico. As of 8 a.m. PDT, Hurricane Manuel was located near 25.0 N and 107.8 W, or about 95 miles southeast of Los Mochis, Mexico. Maximum sustained winds remain at 75 mph. It is moving north at 3 mph and the minimum central pressure is 987 mb, or 29.15 inches of mercury. A Hurricane Warning is now in effect along Mexico`s west-central coast from La Cruz to Topolobampo. Besides high winds, Manuel will drench the Mexican state of Sinaloa with 8 to 12 inches of rain, with up to 15 inches expected locally. A few inches of rain is expected in the southern portion of Baja California. This amount of rain will likely contribute to flash flooding and mudslides. Manuel will likely dissipate to a low pressure in the Gulf of California later this week or this weekend. In the eastern Atlantic, Humberto is barely a tropical depression. As of 5 a.m. EDT, it was located near 33.0 N and 44.3 W, or about 1,030 miles west-southwest of the Azores. Humberto`s top sustained winds are now 35 mph. It is moving to the north at 8 mph. Its minimum central pressure stands at 1009 mb, or 29.80 inches of mercury. Humberto will start to zip northeast as it gets swept deeper into the North Atlantic by an approaching low pressure center. It is losing its tropical characteristics, and is expected to become post-tropical system later today or on Friday. Follow the 2013 tropical season with WeatherBug.
