Three movies recently seen: Divergent and Enders Game. These - TopicsExpress

Three movies recently seen: Divergent and Enders Game. These two movies are reviewed here side by side as they both deal with similar issues but do so in vastly different ways. And Enders Game does it in a far superior manner. Both movies deal with free choice up against a system seeking to manipulate them towards an end goal. Both movies are based on books pitched at teens. Both have interesting plots. But Enders Game is superior for this one fact: it doesnt attempt to be smart, it just is, and treats the audience intelligently. Divergent was ok - but I felt like I was getting some bits explained to me a little too obviously (exposition for expositions sake). So I often felt like I was treated a little simply - especially the discussion on free choice/will and human nature seemed forced at times rather than natural, and no proper explanation is given for why people are so accepting of the faction system of governance/control. I also appreciated the way in which Enders Game raises moral questions - raising them, seeking its own answer, but never preaching to the audience a particular way of thinking through the moral issues raised. The acting, plot twists and storyline were also generally better, more complex and yet still accessible in Enders Game. Final movie seen recently: Godzilla. The reboot returns to the classic Godzilla movie roots (Godzilla vs other giant monsters), has great acting from its known and lesser known cast members, but lacks an epic-ness befitting of Gojira! There are some nice tense moments, but I felt like it could have been scarier... perhaps I didnt have the sound turned up loudly enough.
