Three years ago I sat in HWST 107 at UH Maui College and was shown documentary video footage of Hawaiian decedents screaming in tears at bull dozers while they stood behind barricades protesting as over 800 bodies (not bones, BODIES) of their grandparents were dug up, placed in shoe boxes and shipped to the Bishop Museum, all for the development of the Ritz Carlton Kapalua on Maui (site aka Honokahua). The sand that encased these sacred tombs were used for golf courses. It took the families over three years fighting in court to have the bodies returned to their initial resting place. Part of the court agreement was to have the Ritz move their property further back and appoint a cultural director for the property. This was not something that happened in the 50s or 60s. This event took place in the late 1980s and desecration of family burials continues to happen to this day.
