Three years ago we “rescued” a 5 year-old papered, registered black Boxer who had gotten too large (80lbs) for its owners. “Ace” was a replacement for our equally credentialed brindle Boxer who had gone from perfect health on Thanksgiving, through debilitating seizures until “Justice” died Christmas eve from a brain tumor allegedly stolen from a human. Without warning or previous signs of ill-health, Ace developed what appeared to be “bloat” with increasingly disturbing classic symptoms: distended stomach, nothing going in or out save some sips of water, restlessness, labored persistent panting, and mouth and gums losing color. His vet could not hear his heart, x-rays were quite alarming, and this most gentle dog passed on at 6:30 pm. We consented to an autopsy of sorts to find out what the hell happened. Ace had a football size tumor in his stomach and additional masses surrounding his spleen and a kidney all of which was putting pressure on his esophagus preventing oxygen/blood flow. How long that friend suffered in silence, without a change in a truly sweet disposition, is a mystery to everyone. I am going to canvas the neighborhood to see if anyone is missing a tumor, or two, or three!
