Thrippayar Ekadashi Wishes to all ……18th November Tuesday is “Thriprayar Ekadasi” or “Utpanna Ekadasi”. The festival is celebrated for 14 days in Triprayar SreeRama Swami Temple located in Thrissur district(between Kodungalloor and Guruvayoor in the mid landmass of Chettuva). Like the river Sarayu purifies Ayodhya, a river named Theevra flows along the banks of Triprayar temple. Theevra river is also called Purayar. Hence this place got the name Thirupurayar (sacred river) and later became Triprayar. There is an interesting legend about the origin of this river. Lord Mahavishnu during his Vamana incarnation visited this place while going to Thrikkakkara and he found no water to wash his legs as the whole place was dry and desolate. Vamana took the water from his kamandalu and poured the water to wash his legs, that source of water never went dry but kept on flowing as the Thiru Purayar or the Thriprayar (river of divine source) as it is called now. Purayar is also called Nandiyar. The image of Rama (Triprayar Thevar) resembles the Chaturbhuja Vishnu form with four arms, bearing a conch(Panchajanya), a disc (Sudarsana), a bow (Kodanda) and a garland respectively. It is believed that the deity worshipped here possesses some of the aspects of Shiva too. It was after killing the asura, Khara that Sri Rama got both the Shaiva and Vaishnava aspects. Thus Triprayar Thevar is also called Khara Samhara Moorthy. It is also believed that the portrayal of Rama with a garland held in the images hand is also suggestive of aspects of Bhrahma and hence the deity is said to be a manifestation of the Trimoorthis. Images of Sreedevi and Bhudevi are on either side. There is an image of Dakshinamoorthy, in the sanctum facing the south. Ekadasi celebrations start on Dasami day and the idol of Lord Shastha (Ayyappa) is taken in procession. And on the Ekadasi day, the idol of Lord Rama is taken in procession accompanied by 21 elephants and royal possessions. By observing Ekaadasi at Triprayar, not only the observer but also his forebears attain salvation. Sree Rama Rama Ramethi Rame Raame Manorame Sahasranama Tat Thul-yam Rama Nama Varanane. Ekadasi is the name of the Goddess that arose from Lord Vishnu to defeat Demon(Asura) Mura. The Legend is like this. Once while Bhagwan Narayan was in YogaNidra a demon named Murdanav came and challenged Him to a duel. Suddenly a damsel appeared, evolved out of the Ekadash indriyas of God --.(The ten indriyas - the five karma indriyas (mouth, hands, feet, anus and genital organs) and five gnan indriyas (eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue). The ten indriyas along with the mind are collectively known as “Ekadash indriyas”.) Murdanav was so attracted to this damsel that he asked her to marry him. The damsel agreed, but only if he agreed to a duel with her, Blinded by passion, he fought with her & she killed him. Pleased with her, Bhagavan granted her a boon. She asked, O Prabhu! As I have manifested from your Ekadash indriyas, let my name be Ekadashi. I am wedded to tap (austerity) and I desire that people should observe the Ekadashi vrat (fast) and control their Ekadash indriyas on this day. Pleased with her divine act, Bhagavan Vishnu blessed her that “anyone who observes Ekadasi fast will be freed of their sins and will attain Moksha”…..Narayana … Narayana… Ever since, we Hindus fast on Ekadashi. Ekadashi occurs twice a month in the Hindu calendar …. SreeKrishnarppanamasthu…..
