Throoughout his career, Hugh Masakela has always included songs that reflected the reality of the South African society into which he was born and where apartheid had stripped the native people of their freedom and dignity while exploiting their labor and the resources of the land. In this 1986 performance he deals with the reality of an entire people living and working in slave conditions in their native land based on skin color. The trumpet speaks perhaps more eloquently than wordsin this touching and moving number.
