Through a social residency at Studio 303 in May 2014, I visited Studio 303, immersing myself in the Montreal scene by meeting prospective artistic collaborators, visiting other organizations, and viewing numerous shows. This visit set the stage for the second part of the residency involving me and fellow Aniccha Arts team members Masanari Kawahara, Piotr Szyhalski, and Jasmine Kar Tang. We leave for Montreal tomorrow and will be working with three local dancers and a designer. We will be working on the company’s latest project, Fold, which explores the embodied, material, spatial and sonic dimensions of folding. A commentary on national identity and on questions of belonging, the production explores how different acts of folding across mediums (the folding of sound, of the body, of material) are socially and historically rooted, involving uneven power relations between peoples, communities, and nation-states.
