Through the federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF), municipalities across Ontario have benefited from close to $4.8 billion in predictable and flexible funding for local priorities since 2006. Over the next ten years, Ontario municipalities will receive an estimated $8.12 billion in new federal infrastructure funding through the Gas Tax Fund. The Gas Tax Fund is also now indexed at 2 percent per year; meaning the annual amount available to communities across Canada will grow by $1.8 billion over the next decade. The Gas Tax Fund works to provide financial support for infrastructure projects across Canadian municipalities. By providing these funds, Canadians get better local public infrastructure, and job opportunities. As of 2014, investment categories include projects related to: drinking water, wastewater, solid waste, public transit, local roads and bridges, community energy systems, disaster mitigation, broadband connectivity, highways, brownfield re-development, regional and local airports, and cultural, tourism, recreational, and sport projects. #FederalGTF
