Throwback Thurday: Classmates edition (2): Kales and I, with classmate Dr. Mickey Rubenstein, Taktsang Monastery (top center), Bhutan, April 1994. In a college where arrogance and swagger were coins of the realm, Mickey was the nicest, sweetest guy you could ever want to know--which is not to say he wouldn’t kick your ass on the final exam, laughing all the way. Don’t let the smirks and smiles fool you–the climb up to the “Tiger’s Nest” had been excruciating. On the trails in Bhutan I stuck close to Kales’ friend Skip, who had been an Eagle Scout and knew seemingly trivial things like where the trail actually was. On the climbs, I hung with Mickey, who’s a cardiologist--just in case. A few days later his medical knowledge came in handy when some of our group got lost in a howling Himalayan snowstorm (but that is another story.)
