Throwback Thursday Pick of the Week: Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - Ohio (1970) Vietnam. Vietnam. I was in high school during the Vietnam war...a war that will be forever remembered because it was a war that we lost and the amount of protesting that grew and grew. It was at a time in our culture that birthed hippies, flower power, open political protesting, and musicians that used their talents to vent their own opinions and echo the feelings of the younger generation. Protesting the war and protesting the draft was common place on college campuses. I was among the last of the 18 year olds that were required by law to register for the draft. The possibility of being drafted and being sent to Vietnam was on the mind of all of the young men at the time. Kent State in Ohio was the site of a horrible incident that occurred during an anti-war protest. The governor of the state had ordered the state National Guard to protect the campus and in the process of everything that went on, four students wound up getting shot during one confrontation. It was a horrible tragedy that shook this country. For a senior English class I read Kent State: What Happened and Why by James A. Michener. Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young wrote Ohio about this real life situation. It took a great deal of courage to write what they did and include President Nixons name in the song. It was even banned from many radio stations for quite some time. Vietnam. It was a time in my life that I will never, ever forget. youtube/watch?v=g2UBQX7fwBQ Horns to the Sky!
