Throwback Thursday – 1980 in our rented house in Hamilton, Newcastle NSW – the first year of our marriage. Memories of our first “Golden”” – Reba. Well obviously not a Golden but she had the Golden temperament and it really is her “fault” we are now surrounded by them – currently 11 aged from 5 months to nearly 15 years. Thinking back to her blue eyes and size Reba would have NOT been 6 weeks old when we bought her as an impulse buy in a pet shop! YUP – GUILTY Went in to buy some flakes for Wayne’s indoor aquarium and only had $8 left between us when we saw the puppies in the window. Yes we paid EIGHT DOLLARS for her in early 1980. We were married on 29 Dec 1979 so Reba was our clucky little baby substitute – never did get around to substituting her or the subsequent dogs back the other way :-) We drove Reba from the pet shop to find my parents to show them then drove up the Hunter Valley for Wayne to play in his squash competition (we bought her on a Friday afternoon) and from the squash comp we then drove straight to the Newcastle show. All this was in the night time. Reba stayed in our Kombi van – windows opened – while we spent a couple of hours at the show. She was the perfect traveler and toilet trained no problem. She had so much personality and brains and affection – we were devastated when she was run over by a car just over 3 years later when on a routine exercise run with Wayne. Hence researching a “pure breed”” to try to replicate her beautiful nature.
