Throwback Thursdays: #tbt 15th June 1999. Nikon announces the Nikon D1, the first DSLR built wholly by a main camera manufacturer. Prior to this all other commercial DSLRs were done in collaboration with another company, usually Kodak. Anyone who has used a DCS Kodak will remember how unwieldly they were, with the digital bottom portion being as heavy and as large as the film SLR it was attached to! The D1 however was as big as the film F5, and Nikon used the then popular F100 as the base. It soon spawned the D1x and D1h less than two years later, but it set the base for the successful line of Nikon professional DSLRs! dpreview/reviews/nikond1
