Thursday, 18 July 2013 KRA RESERVED ABOUT REDEVELOPMENT The Karingal Residents Association Inc. is pleased that the State Government has responded to the calls of the community and the local government sector to review planning provisions, Vice President Andrew Dosen said today. “The new system incorporates many ideas that the community have been lobbying for including greater weight afforded to neighbourhood character,” Mr Dosen said. “It is anticipated that the new planning provisions provide for appropriate and responsible development to protect what the community values about Karingal and the broader Frankston area.” “People move to the established suburban setting of Karingal because of the village feel and the sense of community,” Mr Dosen said. “Any development must better integrate community, housing, recreation and retail services so that these attributes are enriched and the whole of Karingal is more cohesive and unified.” “The Association supports the majority of the Draft Frankston Housing Plan for most of the Karingal area, however we remain cautious of significant redevelopment of existing properties in the Karingal Centro Activities Structure Plan area that are destined for high rise and higher density housing,” Mr Dosen said. Mr Dosen said that the key area of interest for our members is what is to be proposed for the 740 redevelopment sites in the Karingal Centro Activities Structure Plan area and the 27 strategic development sites in this area. “The Frankston Housing Plan proposes that the Activities Structure Plan area that incorporates the strategic development sites will allow for high rise, high density development and this would be in stark contrast to the majority of existing single storey dwellings in the area,” Mr Dosen said. “The Association would prefer to see a carefully planned and integrated approach that graduates building levels down to the interface with the existing largely single level housing.” “The Association expects Council to adopt an open and transparent planning regime that will engage in extensive consultation with the community and local residents when deciding on the development of allotments in the strategic development sites and other areas in the Activities Structure Plan,” Mr Dosen said. The Association is putting together a submission to Frankston City Council and expects to take an active role in all consultations with Council throughout the process.
