Thursday 8th August 2013 YU TOK Page 10-11 Letter of the Day: Youth plans not working THE National Youth Commissioner should stop preaching in the media and address the real problems affecting young people in the country. The increase and worsening youth unemployment in PNG is a direct result of poor planning and management of appropriate youth program in the country. It truely reflects lack of ability and capacity of youth government administrators within the commission. As a result our young people have been rejected for so long. These facts were also contained in the World Report released by the World Bank on Youth Employement Issues. The Commission has a well crafted National Youth Policy 2007-2017 that captured key issues affecting the youth population in the country. It also highlights key areas that are also mentioned in the Government’s Medium Term Development Strategy and Vision 2050. However, National Youth Commission under Current Acting Commissioner Mr Norit Luio has dragged implementation since his appointment last Year although there was adequate government funding of more than K8million last year alone. What has the National Commission done last year with K8million? The National Government is right at the heart of Youth Issues and allocated this money for the youths in the country. The National Youth Commission has lost focus and needs to be reviewed. There was no need for Luio to request more funding from the National Government and sign MOA after MOA for establishing National Youth Institute. The Yesterday’s Signing of MOA with Minister for Foreign Affairs and Wapenamanda MP Rimbink Pato was a waste of time. How will National Youth Commission establish this National Youth Institute when National Youth Commission has failed MOA with Milne Bay Provincial Government, East Sepik and Hela to Establish Youth Friendly Centres last year? National Government through National Planning Department funded these provinces as pilot provinces to establish Youth Friendly Centres and allocated K4million through its PIP submission. Where have these funds gone to? On behalf of the Youth of this country we needs explanation from the acting Commissioner Mr Norit Luio how he has used up this money and also request O’Neill Government to establish an inquiry in to the use of funds allocated for Youth Friendly Centres.
