I keep thinking I need to get up and start earlier but have had a hard time breaking camp early. Bolton is my least favorite mountain to be sure. The mud seems super slippery, the rocks pointy, roots extra trippy. The terrain seemed to change rapidly and I could never settle into a comfortable rhythm. Hard to make time and didnt find it all that aesthetically appealing. There were definitely sections that were nice. There must be a military base or something that keeps blasting some VLF sounds. Jumped the crap out of me the first time I heard it. Sounded like a cross between a fog horn and the smoke monster from Lost. It was so out of place I began to wonder if I actually heard it at all. But I did. A second time, then third, totaling a half dozen times that morning. Stopped at Puffer for lunch. What a fantastic view. Stopped at Taylor for second lunch and chatted with 3 nice folks out for a day hike. Met a couple hiking South that seemed unhappy when they asked about and I told them about the terrain on Bolton. Maybe I should have painted a more optimistic picture because I watched her face turn from happy to sour. Hey, Im a realist! Arrived at Butler shelter. What a great ascent up Mansfield. My internal mile-o-meter must be off. Took longer than I expected to arrive. Susan is the caretaker here at Butler and its by far the best lodge Ive seen. Shes sweet and has a no-nonsense attitude I like. Also she sets mousetraps which is awesome. I wake up at about 1am with a wicked toothache. I reluctantly took two vitamin I which to my surprise helped a great deal and I was back to sleep in no time. Tomorrow I will summit Mt. Mansfield. Vermonts highest peak. -- Mudsocks
