Thursday, March 6, 2014 CORRECTIONS INVESTIGATING ASSAULT ON STAFF MEMBER AT ASPC-LEWIS PHOENIX (March 6, 2014) – Investigators from the Arizona Department of Corrections are conducting a criminal investigation into an assault on a Corrections Officer by an inmate-suspect this morning at the ASPC-Lewis Complex in Buckeye. At approximately 6:55 AM, an Officer at the Minimum Security Eagle Point Unit was walking through a common area of the unit when the inmate-suspect assaulted the Officer without warning. The inmate-suspect appears to have used a small weighted bag to strike the Officer several times before the Officer was able to get away and call for assistance. Eagle Point personnel quickly gained control of the situation, locked down the unit and the inmate-suspect is now being held for questioning. The Officer was alert and conscious and transported to an area hospital with injuries to the head and face. The injuries are not considered life-threatening. “This is another reminder of the dangers Corrections employees face on a daily basis,” Director Charles Ryan said. “No matter the level of custody, a prison is a dangerous place, and our first priority is always safety. The Department’s Critical Incident Response Team is assisting the family of this Corrections Officers and will look after the welfare of the family as the Officer recovers from these injuries. Additionally, the Department of Corrections will ask that the inmate-suspect be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Attacks of this type are cowardly and intolerable,” Ryan added. ###
