Tick Tock - Memphis - Tick Tock Since my last post was far too long, Ill try and keep this one much shorter. I have tried doing several internet searchers to find out how much it costs Memphis to train a police officer and a firefighter. While I have find figures from other cities, I was unable to find out what it cost Memphis to train and certify either a police officer or a firefighter. When the very courageous and intelligent young lady name Rachel Knox spoke before the city council, on behalf of its current and retired employees, she stated that it currently cost seventy thousand ($70,000) dollars to train a police officer and one hundred thousand ($100,000) to train a firefighter. I have no reason to doubt these figures and they seem to match up to the training cost of other cities to train their fire and police personal. The numbers are somewhat confusing, but as I understand it five (5) Memphis police officers and two (2) Memphis firefighters have resigned due to the current insurance and benefit cuts. If the figures that Rachel Knox gave are correct, then the mayor, the city council seven (7) and the members of the Chamber of Commerce have cost this city approximately five hundred and fifty thousand ($550,000.) dollars that it cost to train these men of the fire and police departments. This of course means that it is going to cost this city another five hundred and fifty thousand ($550,000.) just to train these mens replacement. Because of the actions of Mayor A. C. Wharton, the city council seven (7) and the members of the Chamber of Commerce it is going to cost the city approximately one million one hundred thousand dollars ($1,100,000) just to have trained those who quite and those who will replace them. This doesnt even consider the amount of experience each of these police officers and firefighters had accumulated during their academy training and their years in the field. Nor does it consider what it is going to cost our city to replace the men and women that need to be hired to bring both departments back up to an acceptable level. How many more of this cities trained and experienced police officers and firefighters is this city going to have to lose before the mayor, the city council seven (7) and the members of the Chamber of Commerce return the benefits and the insurance they have stripped away from these brave men and women. The citizens of Memphis need to know that everyone working for the MPD and the MFD who has ten (10) or less years were stripped of their benefits they have all been working toward since they were employed. The city is going to put everyone with ten (10) years or less on a 401 retirement plan. What this means is that everyone working for the City of Memphis who has ten (10) years or less may be considering leaving their departments. So far, I have been told that the Austin TX PD has been recruiting police officers in Memphis and that New Orleans is planing on coming to Memphis later in the year so they can also recruit. There have been suggestions that other major police department, along with some departments from smaller cities, are contacting the Memphis Police Union about hiring our officers. I have also heard that a major city is coming to Memphis in December, so they can attempt to hire some of our firefighters. How many more of our trained and experienced police officers and our firefighters are we going to have to lose before this situation is made right? Tick Tock - Memphis - Tick Tock
