“Till He Come” - #6 1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come. The fellowship enjoyed in the “wine and bread” at this table. The Lord has provided a very tender scene for us to consider when we think about the breaking of bread. The account is found in Luke 24 – Jesus has died and was buried, some of His disciples watched to see what would happen, yet with it being the third day, and seemingly nothing having happened, two of them decided to go home to a little village called Emmaus. Luke 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. Probably seemed like the best idea at the time, lets just go home and get some rest, with everything that has happened, we can check on things in the morning! Luke 24:14 –Luke 24:17 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? Remember now, these brethren spent a lot of time with Jesus while He was here in the flesh, they knew Him, yet not now, Jesus changes His appearance and they cannot tell who they are talking to, and on top of all that, this man hasn’t even hear what has happened! Luke 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? Cleopas knew that this man must be a stranger just passing through because there was no way that someone from this area was not aware of what had happen in the last week, I mean everyone knew about Jesus, He was known far and wide as being a righteous and Holy man and then everything changed! Luke 24:19 –Luke 24:20 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. These men not only knew about Jesus, but they had seen that this was no ordinary man, and they also knew that what the Chief Priest had done was wrong. Luke 24:21 –Luke 24:24 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. How this word must have impacted the Savior, Here He was, walking and talking with them, hearing these things portrayed by some of His disciples, yet also knowing that they have not yet believed! The things that they speak of are right on the border spectacular, but the desire to “see with their own eyes” had hindered their faith. Luke 24:25 –Luke 24:27 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Now, this seemingly foreign man is leading them in an exposition of everything that Moses and the Prophets have spoken concerning Jesus! How this must have drawn them into the events of the day, Jesus is a master teacher, and He is here opening up and drawing conclusions that these men had not seen! – Had it never occurred to these brethren that Jesus “ought to suffer” in order to take the sins of the world away?, yet, before we pass to stiff of a judgment against these men, remember the Spirit has not yet been given, and how much understanding did you have before “the dasystar” arose in your heart? Luke 24:28 –Luke 24:29 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. They were almost home, and yet this man had begin to stir up hope in these brethren, we don’t know if this was Cleopas and his wife, but it may have been. They did not want this man to stop talking, but Jesus “made as though he would have gone further” – Jesus still does this today, He is testing us to see if we will “constrained him, saying, Abide with us” – How easy is it for you to let Jesus slip out of your memory? I can tell you that what happened next made these two filled with joy for extending themselves to hear the word of God. Luke 24:30 –Luke 24:31 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. It is no coincidence that Jesus made Himself known “in the breaking of bread” – this is the Jesus that they had come to know and love, this stranger handled the bread in such a manner as to call their remembrance to another time when Jesus broke the bread, in an upper room with His disciples, and it was during this time of enlightenment that He opened their eyes! – We have not record that He spoke a single word to them after that, but he “vanished out of their sight” the real miracle is that they saw him at all, and yet the fact that they knew that Jesus was alive changed everything. Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Now we are given to see why they constrained Him to come in, because their hearts were burning, but when He broke the bread, it burned all the brighter! So, what will Cleopas and his companion do? Can they sleep? Will they rest up and go back tomorrow to share this news? Luke 24:33 –Luke 24:35 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. Jesus is even now at the right hand of God! We meet at His table to “remember Him” to consider His death, and all that is associated with that death, and as we consider Him, He draws near, near to our hearts and spirits, and He speaks peace and “makes Himself known” in the breaking of bread! Praise God for the “table of remembrance” – it is a holy time, a consecrated place for a sanctified people to fellowship with their God and Savior, Christ Jesus!
