Till a few years ago we used to be proud of our city, as a woman friendly cultured metropolis. Today a group of street urchins on motorcycles are forcing us to hang our heads in shame. Woman chased through residential oasis with the words: ‘I want to **** her’ – 16th July 2013 telegraphindia/1130717/jsp/.../story_17125957.jsp Forget shame, fight for city: French lady – 22nd July 2013 telegraphindia/1130722/jsp/.../story_17143124.jsp Bikers spy women, cry ‘pick them up’ – 22nd July telegraphindia/1130722/jsp/calcutta/story_17141785.jsp A Calcuttan asks: Should late-night films, dinner and disco be banned? telegraphindia/1130723/jsp/frontpage/story_17146917.jsp#.Ue5jC7_nZSo Are we going to stand and watch like cowards do, as these bike gangs take over the streets of our city? Are we going to wait till it happens to a friend or loved one? This is the time when all residents of Kolkata must rise up as one, for this is not a fight against oppression, tyranny, corruption or inflation. This is the fight for our right to live. We must hit back, and hit back hard, with such force, that these social parasites will remember forever. We live in a country where most homes, have independent water pumping units, back up generators, and private security. It is clear that the successive governments have failed at even providing us basic amenties like water and electricity, security is a hope we shouldn’t even consider having. We must take things in our own hands, we have to stand up and fight for our right to exist. Every weekend thousands of people like me go out at night to parties, movies, and restaurants. We are the people who are pushing up the growth figures in this country. We are a group consisting of executives, professionals, entrepreneurs, celebrities etc. every person who is working hard to make this city prosper. We are the people who have first rights on this city, because we have made this city what it is today. As with every fight, we must start at one point and then spread out. We start where we are the strongest, and hope to create a model that the whole city can follow. This goes out as a request to club owners, managers, DJs, and other celebrities, Park Street is the pride of our city; it is where the rich and influential mix with each other. It is where we are the strongest; let’s start the fight back from here. This idea can only become a movement if we all come together. Club owners from Tantra, Roxy, SPE, Aqua, Shisha, Plush, Nocturn, 9F(Venom) and Underground need to come together. Like we have bouncers outside every club, we need to secure the streets around these clubs. If a security force of 100 people were to be hired. Each personnel would roughly cost Rs. 10,000 per month. That makes the total cost of our security force Rs. 10,00,000 per month. This is a large expense, but every month the above listed clubs host 10,000 people collectively, if they charged a mere Rs. 100 extra per person, we could easily afford this security. Lets get these 100 private security officers into groups of 10 each, arm them and strategically position them around Park Street, Theatre Road, Camac Street, and AJC Bose Road. The next time a group of bikers even look at a woman wrongly, lets knock them off their bikes, and show them how the public fights back. Lets strike with a force that will shock and awe. This may seem like a teenage dream, which is only interested in the party continuing, but my reasoning behind asking the party people to step up is simple. 1: We want to go out at night. 2: We can afford the security. 3: We must stand up for our women. We will not hide in our homes, we will not allow our women to be raped, we will fight back, and we will win.
