Time to reveal our #WhatIsItWednesday! While many of you were headed in the right direction (or area of the body), we are looking at the very famous and sought after mouth of Micropterus salmoides (The LARGEMOUTH Bass). The Largemouth Bass is native to eastern North America and historically ranged from southern Canada to northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic coast to the central region of the United States. Largemouth bass prefer quiet, clear, shallow (less than 2.5 meter) water with abundant vegetation. Abundant vegetation is important because it allows bass to hide from their prey and provides protection against becoming prey themselves. Their environment is also made up of regions of clear waters where the bass vision can be utilized to detect prey. Since the beginning of the twentieth century largemouth bass have been introduced successfully all over the world. In some countries, they can even be considered the most invasive fish species, gobbling up native fish. Fishing for Largemouth or some if its other closest relatives in the Black Bass family contributes greatly to local and state economies. With approximately 11 million people fishing for black bass in the US alone each year, you can imagine the economic gain from folks getting out and hitting the water. Many states across the US offer a free fishing day on or around July 4th, so get out this weekend and enjoy a little bass fishing!
