Tip of the day. Three good reasons for regular grooming.... One: It keeps your dog looking fantastic (even without that diamond-studded collar you were fawning over at the jewelry store). Two: It helps promote hair and skin health. But, best of all is number three: It becomes a special time for just you and your best Frenchie friend to bond. One other benefit you might not have considered is the reduced workload for the old vacuum cleaner. Brushing gets rid if a lot of dead hair and dander that would otherwise find its way into your carpet. More than that, running the brush through the coat distributes natural oils that protect and vitalize the dog’s skin and leave the coat with a beautiful sheen. A gentle going over once a day with a soft, dense brush will not be much of an overburden to Phydeaux (pronounced Fido). He will definitely welcome the attention. Performing the task two to three times a week is probably easier on you. However, once a week or even every other week is no doubt sufficient to produce all the advantages of a healthy coat without taxing anyone’s busy schedule. It all depends on you, your time allocation and your ambition level. You might start out with back brushing the coat to loosen old hair and dead skin and then finish with a soothing stroke in the direction of the grain. The occasional bath is highly recommended, preferably using a natural, hypoallergenic shampoo for sensitive doggy skins. Preferably not a human shampoo as dogs have a different skin ph to humans and our shampoo’s may well irritate their delicate skins. Frenchies aren’t the most bath loving dogs, so every month or two depending on what they’ve been up to, is perfectly fine. Remember, animals in the wild groom each other to keep their coats and skin healthy and free of parasites. More than that, it is a powerful social activity, bonding individuals and groups together. So it is with humans and their dogs. It has rewards for the groomer as well as the groomee. I wonder if all this need for touchee-feelie isn’t why we refer to our animals as ‘pets’:-)
