:: Tips for 2015 PSLE parents - 4hr daily revision :: Your child would have probably received their report book by now. Congratulations to pupils who have done well in the Primary 5 exams. As we know P5 is indeed a very demanding year for the pupils due to the big gap in curriculum between P4 and P5 and introduction of challenging topics. Regardless of how your child performs, there is little point in looking back and regret. Instead, look ahead to the upcoming months and devise a study plan for your child. :: Minimum 4hrs of daily revision in Nov/Dec school holidays :: I have consistently advised by PSLE students to spend a minimum 4 hours of revision daily during the Nov/Dec school holidays. Of course, most would grumble. However, I put forward to my students that 1hr of daily revision per subject is indeed very reasonable and achievable. :: Performance Evaluation :: You would need to evaluate your childs performance and address the areas of concerns. Identify weak subjects and topics. Revise those subjects and topics first. Ensure that weak concepts are reinforced and misconceptions addressed. We know that 4 subjects have equal weightage in the PSLE. So if your child is good in 3 subjects and fails a subject it would really pull down the overall aggregate score. For example, a child who gets 2A*, 1A and 1C may get a lower aggregate score than a student who gets 4As For admission to secondary school what matters most is the T-score, not the number of A*. :: So what should my child do in the 4-hr daily revision? :: 1) Complete unfinished worksheets, assessment books and top school papers. You may want to get your child to complete the P5 top school papers if they have done so. Its widely available on the internet and the photocopy kiosks. 2) Create mind maps (some term it as concept map) for various topics and subjects. Mind maps aid in consolidating concepts and memory retention. Its applicable main for Science but can also be effectively used in English and Mother tongue composition and oral planning. 3) Learn ahead. Purchase P6 books early so that you child can start revising during the holidays. 2015 would be a very hectic year for the PSLE students. Schools would rush to complete the syllabus by June and as such the P6 teachers would have to teach at a very fast pace. How much the pupils can catch up would depend largely on the ability of the child to cope with the furious pace and the home support that the child receives. Challenging Maths topics at P6 includes Algebra, Speed, Circles and Advance percentage and volume questions. For Science, its Energy Conversion, Forces and Adaption. That is all for now. If you find the tips useful, do SHARE it with other 2015 parents. Mr. Yang, Principal Tutor (also a 2013 and 2015 PSLE parent and former HOD) edufront
