Tis the season to be in season! Lots of our dogs are going in heat now (although they go in heat at all times of the year). If your female dog is still intact, be sure to pay close attention to any signs of illness or just being off about a month after they came in heat. This is the typical time infection shows up in the uterus, called pyometra. They can get pyometra at other times, but this is typical and is a life threatening condition. Pyos come in a closed and open variety. With a closed pyo, the pus and infection build up in the uterus with no discharge. With an open pyo, there will be a discharge that is usually brownish or reddish. If your female dog was in heat a month earlier (give or take a week) and is not eating well or acting off, pay attention. This is a very serious condition. While it can be treated if caught early, the safest treatment is an ovariohysterectomy.
