Title: Polly’s Turkey Crusade Description: Polly’s upset about the treatment of turkeys at Thanksgiving. Date: 1982 Comments: This bit and the one named Polly’s Thanksgiving Dilemma are two bits that ran in close succession in November 1982. In Polly’s Thanksgiving Dilemma, which preceded this bit by a few days, Polly can’t decide if she wants to eat turkey or ham for Thanksgiving dinner. In this bit, Polly’s Turkey Crusade, her character is now against the consumption of turkeys. The fact that these two bits depict Polly with conflicting personae demonstrates the show’s writing philosophy: keep characters consistent—or don’t, depending on the demands of the material. Writing for a show that aired five days-a-week, year-in/year-out, meant there was no tossing out bits due to a little contradiction—we used everything; we couldn’t afford not to. More than likely, any discrepancies probably went unnoticed—unless the bits aired closely together as in the case of these clips. However, though they seem at odds, they actually are true to Polly’s character—I have always thought of her as not having both knitting needles in the yarn—so, her about-face is completely in keeping with her personality. So, whether it is with turkey—or some other turkey-friendly alternative, have a Happy Thanksgiving.
