Abstract: This report provides some demographic data and trends in Juba, the Capital of the Equatorial province. The population in Juba increases due to internal displacement from areas of conflicts. Up to 2000 the elderly population was 8.562; they constitute around 5.5% of the total population. The elderly in Juba were classified in three major categories; extremely vulnerable, very vulnerable and vulnerable. The paper reviewed the role of the Combined Agencies Relief in supporting the population with basic needs including food. There were around 14 NGOs filling the vacuum of the government. Help age International is the only agency in Juba that seeks to promote the welfare of the elderly especially the extremely vulnerable ones. The nature of the work is community based. Shelter provision became real to the shelter less elderly in Juba. Help Age International had an agreement with the Swedish Mission in Juba to rehabilitate 39 boreholes in Muniki. Sanitation services were provided. The paper reviewed the existing problems facing the whole population of Juba including lack of security, lack of development, immigration, migration and poverty with its implications as malnutrition, infectious diseases, disabilities and shortened life span. Economic implications of poverty were reviewed such as lack of appropriate financial support, lack of income generation programs, luck of agricultural and industrial projects. There were neither paltry nor cattle keeping projects. The report stressed on the fact that malnutrition was the main problem in Juba town and its surroundings. The report concluded with several major recommendations, including advocacy for the enhancement of the socio-economic situations of the elderly among the officials; acquaintance with impacts of wars on the Equatorial region, assessing the needs of the elderly in Juba and finally to make an agreement with the World Food Program to increase the quantity and improve the quality of food by adding some proteins and supplements in a form of vitamins and minerals.
