To Rhonda Nguyen, Mom number 2, I met Rhonda when I was 13 yrs old. She embraced the brotherhood I was just starting to develop with Jon. By the time I was 15 she thought I was a bad influence on Jon. Almost every time we greeted each other she would somehow manage to have a fitting story that would allow her to say the words “give a person enough rope, they will eventually hang themselves”. It was always her way of telling me she was watching me. Years of camping trips, and rides to and from here and there, always did she have something to say. Always did she have a story to tell. Always did she have advice to give. By 18 after Jon left for Boot camp, She hugged me tighter than anyone ever has. With what I felt was anger and sadness, She told me straight to my face that “this” was your fault. The day Jon came back she hugged me again, not so tight that time, her face filled with pride, joy and love for her son. She simply said thank you. I have never thought much of it until now. As I contemplate the joys and the laughs of over 20 years. She always had a plan. She always had some control. She always knew where we would land. She always knew what buttons to push and how far she could push them. Never ever would she back down. Never ever would she admit defeat. On her last day, she was not defeated, but rather left when she knew her Son and Daughters had learned all she could teach. For as abstract has the Nguyen family is and has been. I am deeply humbled and extremely proud to have been there with her. So I say to you Rhonda, simply ,… Thank you.
