Received this today from the Democratic Governors Association Victoria We told you about disastrous voter suppression laws in Texas, Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Yesterday North Carolina’s Gov. Pat McCrory signed a voter suppression law that puts the others to shame. The North Carolina bill not only requires strict government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot -- it also cuts the number of early voting days by a week, eliminates same-day voter registration during the early voting period, makes it easier for vigilante poll watchers to challenge the validity of eligible voters, and ends pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, among other terrible provisions. Hillary Clinton said the North Carolina bill “reads like the greatest hits of voter suppression.” It’s as if Governor McCrory took all the worst ideas from the other Republican governors and rolled them up into one terrible mega-bill. Fight back by adding your name to our petition opposing the shameful North Carolina voter suppression law. How could anyone oppose making it easier for citizens to vote? Here’s your answer: African-Americans are 23 percent of registered voters in North Carolina, but made up 29 percent of early voters in 2012, 30 percent of those who cast out-of-precinct ballots, 34 percent of the 318,000 registered voters without state-issued ID and 41 percent of those who used same-day registration, according to The Nation. Rather than change their radical policies to try to win over more African-American voters, Governor McCrory and North Carolina Republicans believe it’s simply easier to deny more African-Americans the right to vote. It’s an odious move, particularly in a state that has a long history of official discrimination. There are already legal challenges in the works, but unfortunately the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act has taken away a potent weapon for our side. We have to win back these governorships and restore voting rights, before it’s too late. That’s our best chance. Thank you for being with us on the front lines.
