To all my friends (wether you know me on a personal basis or not) please read this before buying a car. Tips when buying a car, these are in order of what you should do and check. 123s of car purchasing in plain English!!!! 1. Dont meet anyone by yourself (especially women). 2. Do not ever put money on a green card and give the seller the numbers. It is a scam and you will be broke within seconds with nothing to show for your hard earned cash. 3. If they tell you to meet at one place and its at another walk away. 4. Before negotiating any price ask to see the title. B. The title should not have any lien holder C. Should not have any names or signatures on back. (An individual cannot sell a car with a name already filled out on the 1st reassignment on back, but a licensed car dealer can.). If seller is an individual and does not have title in hand walk away. The only time you should ever buy a car without a title and on a bill of sale only is if you are buying an antique and it is 35 years or older. A dealer has 30 days to get you the title. D. Look in the bottom right corner for brands. I will list the definitions that could be there below. D-1. Blank= then no worries. D-2. Prior Salvage = means nothing needs to be done, but keep in mind it does take away from the value therefore dont pay book value. Also check with your insurance company if you carry full coverage sometimes they will take a percentage off if you have a total loss accident. D-3. Salvage = this means the vehicle was damaged somehow it could just mean hail damage or it could have been in an accident. Ask the buyer why this brand is there or do a car fax. You must obtain a Highway Patrol Inspection and need to know this! If it was wrecked you will need to know where at and if it is repaired either by you or seller you need pics prior to sale and receipts to all parts installed. Sometimes an insurance company will pay off on a car and salvage the title just because the repairs are higher than 80% of the vehicle value. D-4. Non Highway or Non repairable. Steer clear these vehicles can never be made road worthy again (not even in another state). For one reason or another the insurance company deemed this brand necessary and its usually for the protection of the consumer. 5. Ask to see the sellers photo identification and make sure it matches name on front of title, if it does not and the owner listed on front is not and cannot be present or there is no power of attorney present then walk away. Another common scam is oh its my grandmas and I can sign. Well after you pay and leave they report it stolen. (It happened to my father in law. He had to return the car to the owner and lost 6k on a Nissan and he had title in hand). 6. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is! Follow your gut instinct and dont make impulse decisions. 7. Check, check and recheck. Its your job as the buyer to not get screwed. Have a trusted source or mechanic check it over. 8. When you decide everything is satisfactory and you are ready to purchase, make sure the entire 1st assignment is complete filled out. Name. Address. City. State. Zip code. Odometer. Purchase price. Name and signature of both seller and buyer. Sellers name and signature must be exactly as it appears on front of title. 9. Remember YOU GET what you PAY FOR. If you are buying a car for under $3000.00 then most likely it is going to have to do some repair soon. And if its under $1500.00 then you most definitely will need to! **If you ever have a question then call me anytime or message me! Ive had 4 friends burned in the last 5 days just by not doing one or more of the above. I have been a licensed car dealer for 15 years and would rather give you advice or walk you through then you lose your hard earned money. And remember there is no such thing as a cheap, good running, nice looking car! Even my new cars have some defects.
